6th Annual TxCSL Service-Learning Summer Institute 2009 June 15-17, 2009 Marriott Austin Airport South, Austin, TX
Reflections on the 2008 Summer Institute This is the type of revolution that needs to be started! This approach makes sense and will be extremely applicable for working with kids. Cathy and Jim’s enthusiasm is contagious! I learned so much. The institute renewed my spirit to do the work and live life fully! I came away with new and immediate tools to advance service-learning in my school and in our district. Overview Teaching and learning in the 21st century is more global, technological, and interdisciplinary than ever before. Engaging students in service-learning addresses the needs of a complex and dynamic society with the creative energy of our best natural resource—our youth. Join your colleagues for the 6th Annual TxCSL Service-Learning Summer Institute, the premier professional development event in service-learning in Texas. This year’s institute will include workshops by nationally recognized consultants Cathy Berger Kaye and Jim and Pamela Toole among others, in addition to workshops by outstanding Texas presenters. For those new to service-learning, you’ll gain practical resources and helpful suggestions to allow you to be successful right away. Intermediate and advanced practitioners will deepen their knowledge of service-learning through targeted sessions on topics such as global awareness, environmental stewardship, strategies for rigorous learning across the curriculum, and ways to sustain and institutionalize success. Everyone will benefit from the opportunity to grow professionally and network with his or her peers. Attendees are also invited to enjoy a catered dinner reception on Tuesday night at the Bob Bullock Texas History Museum. Come celebrate the fun and fellowship while learning how to facilitate wonderful service-learning projects with your students! Youth Track is now full. Email Isela Diharce at idiharce@txcsl.org if you want to add your students to the waiting list in case of any cancellations. Youth Track (Required Forms Here) Middle and high school students from around the state of Texas will come together to participate in a service-learning experience prepared by a team of young people. On the first day of the Youth Track, students will engage in team building activities, preparation for the service-learning project, and deepening their understanding of service-learning. On the second day, everyone will get into action to benefit the local community on a project within the city of Austin. During this time, students will experience service, reflection, teamwork, documentation of the project and much more. On the last day, students will prepare and deliver a presentation to the conference attendees to illustrate the impact of the service-learning project.
