Cathryn Berger Kaye
Cathryn Kaye Photo Cathryn Berger Kaye, M.A., president of CBK Associates, is a former classroom teacher and International Service Learning Consultant. She works with state departments of education, university faculty and students, school districts, and classroom teachers on a variety of education issues such as service learning, civic responsibility, student leadership, and respectful school communities. She is the author of The Complete Guide to Service Learning: Proven, Practical Ways to Engage Students in Civic Responsibility, Academic Curriculum, & Social Action, the new Free Spirit Service Learning for Kids Series, and an innovative program linking literacy, character education, and civic engagement--Strategies for Success with Literacy: A Learning Curriculum that Serves. Jim Toole
Jim Toole Photo James Toole, Ph.D. is President of Compass Institute and a Teaching and Research Fellow at the University of Minnesota in the School of Social Work and College of Education. He has taught at every level from pre-school and kindergarten through graduate school. James works with a wide variety of organizations on issues including service-learning, global youth leadership development, organizational change, connecting spiritually and service, and global health. His main mentor is his four year old daughter Christiana.

 

Shelley H. Billig, Ph.D.
Dr. Shelley H. Billig is Vice President of RMC Research Corporation in Denver, CO. She currently serves as Principal Investigator of several evaluation and research studies of service-learning, character development, civic engagement, and school reform. She is Senior L-12 Program Advisor for the National Service-Learning Clearinghouse, staffed the National commission on Service- Learrning as the research expert, and recently facilitated the process to develop new research-based service-learning standards and indicators of quality. She has published 11 books and over a dozen articles on service-learning, in addition to her longstanding work in developing district and school improvement systems.

PeaceJam
PeaceJam is a year-long, on-going international peace education program that gives students and their sponsor the rare opportunity to personally meet with a Nobel Peace Laureate during a two-day annual conference in Houston.  The PeaceJam Youth Conference is open to all youth ages 14-19 interested in learning about concepts surrounding peace and nonviolence and the root causes of violence and oppression.  PeaceJam curricular programs are also available for K-8th grade.

The PeaceJam training session will provide you with all of the knowledge and material needed to bring PeaceJam to your school or community organization.

EPICS
Based on the successful EPICS (Engineering Programs in Community Service) program model developed at Purdue University, the EPICS High program is a high school model that integrates engineering design concepts with service-learning.  Developed to engage and motivate high school students in the fields of engineering and technology-based design, this program offers much more by reinforcing STEM learning and effectively teaching students the professional skills needed to succeed in today’s workforce.  This workshop will introduce participants to this exciting model of rigorous service-learning that addresses the educational needs of students and the technical needs of community members and organizations.
